Substitute Instructional Assistants and Independence Facilitators

CUSD is currently looking for Substitute Instructional Assistants and Independence Facilitators in our Student Support Services department.  Shifts vary from 3.5-8 hours per day.  As a substitute Instructional Assistant/Independence Facilitator you would have the opportunity to choose the schools and shift hours in which you would like to work.  If interested, apply at https://www.edjoin.org/Home/JobPosting/956314.

Attendance Matters

The attendance rate is important because students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. It's difficult for the teacher and the class to build their skills and progress if a large number of students are frequently absent.

It helps us build opinions and have points of view on things in life. People debate over the subject of whether education is the only thing that gives knowledge. Some say education is the process of gaining information about the surrounding world while knowledge is something very different. They are right.

School budgets may suffer when students don’t attend. In many states, school budgets are based on the average daily attendance at a school. If many students enrolled at a school fail to consistently attend, the school has less money to pay for essential classroom needs.

The attendance rate is important because students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. It’s difficult for the teacher and the class to build their skills and progress if a large number of students are frequently absent. In addition to falling behind in academics, students who are not in school on a regular basis are more likely to get into trouble with the law and cause problems in their communities.

A 2008 study conducted by the Rodel Community Scholars at Arizona State University that tracked students from kindergarten through high school found that dropout patterns were linked with poor attendance, beginning in kindergarten. Gregory Hickman, director of the Rodel Community Scholars program and former director of the Arizona Dropout Initiative, notes they discovered that as early as kindergarten, behavioral differences are apparent between those who go on to graduate and those who drop out, with dropouts missing an average of 124 days by eighth grade.

Red Ribbon Fun Run

The Fun Run is off to a great start!    We have over 75% of the students registered.  That’s amazing for only 4 days!   We have a steady amount of pledges coming in - a big thank you for your generosity.

The next prize distribution is next Thursday (or Friday for 2nd graders).   Anyone who has sent out 12 pledge emails by Tuesday (10/17) will receive an emoji backpack.  They will be delivered on Thursday (Friday for 2nd graders).   No pledges are required to receive the backpack.

A couple of notes about the prizes:

The night light (4 point prize) came with a protective plastic wrap around the batteries.  The plastic will need to be removed before use.

The Emoji Pillows that were sent did not meet our high exceptions, so a replacement order was made. They are expected tomorrow and will be delivered to the students next week.

We ran out of Tornado Mugs.  Another shipment will arrive early next week.

Important Safety Tips for Kids

Now that we have recently begun a new school year, please review the following safety tips with your children.

  * Don’t talk to strangers.

   *Don’t take anything from strangers.

*Don’t go anywhere with someone you don’t know.

*Stay more than an arm’s reach from strangers. If you are approached by a stranger, seek help immediately.

Trust your instincts, if you feel you are being followed or something is not right, seek help immediately.

*Use the buddy system, avoid walking anywhere alone.

  * Review contact telephone numbers and home safety practices.

*When seeking help, always go to a trusted adult – teacher, coach, police officer, other parent, or older siblings.

*If a stranger grabs you, do everything you can to stop him or her from pulling you away.

*Drop to the ground, kick, hit, bite, and scream. Do whatever it takes to attract the attention of others who can help you. If someone is dragging you away, scream, “this is not my dad,” or “this is not my mom.”

*Report any suspicious activity to your local school and police department.

Parking

All numbered parking spots are reserved for a specific staff member.  Staff members come and go throughout the day.  Please do not park in a numbered spot anytime during the day.  This includes when dropping students off for the YMCA in the morning.

WATCH D.O.G Orientation

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

We are currently registering kindergarteners for the 2017.2018 school year.  Please tell your neighbors.

KHAN ACADEMY CHALLENGE

In an effort to encourage students to use Khan Academy on a more regular basis at home and to boost math/technology skills, we will be rewarding students with PRIDE tickets every week at Wednesday announcements. We will reward the first set of students on March 15th and continue through the end of the year.

  • We will reward/recognize the top two energy point earners in primary and upper each week.
  • Each student will receive 10 PRIDE tickets.
  • The energy points can be earned Thursday to Wednesday. Since it is not cumulative, all students will have an equal chance to win each week.
  • All students must use their Capistrano Unified Google ID.
  • All students interested in the contest must add Mr. Tanioka as a coach and enter the Energy Point Millionaire Class Code: REGBPX

Parent Tips

  • Every student should start by achieving mastery in Kindergarten and work their way up. By doing this, parents/students/teachers will be able to see where their gaps are.
  • Try to work on it for no more than 10-15 minutes per day. It’s better to work on modules every day as opposed to one or two large time blocks per week. Do whatever works best with your schedule.
  • Please do not provide help or assistance on Mastery Challenge questions, as it will prove if they have truly Mastered a math concept.
  • Set daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly goals to motivate students.
  • Help students develop a Growth Mindset. It’s ok to FAIL (First Attempt In Learning) and make mistakes. Praise the process (effort, using multiple strategies, showing work, perseverance, and grit), not the product.
  •

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Tanioka at

March, 2017

Dear LRES Parent/Guardian,

California is field testing a new website designed to help communities across the state access important information about K-12 districts and schools. Called the California School Dashboard (https://www.caschooldashboard.org), the site features easy-to-read reports on multiple measures of school success, including test scores, graduation rates, English learner progress and suspension rates. The Dashboard is part of California’s new school accountability system based on 2013’s Local Control Funding Formula. It is the next step in a series of major shifts in public education that have raised the bar for student learning, transformed testing and placed the focus on equity for all students. To learn more about California’s accountability and continuous improvement efforts, visit http://www.cde.ca.gov/dashboard.

Why a new system and a new tool?

The Dashboard is a key part of California’s commitment to transparency and continuous improvement. California’s future success depends on tapping into the potential of all students, so they graduate ready for college, careers and life. For schools to reach this goal, teachers, parents and the community need clear and useful measures of progress. As an accountability tool, the Dashboard will help the state identify schools (including charter schools) and districts needing targeted assistance.

What’s different?

In the past, accountability systems for districts and schools relied solely on test scores. But one test taken on one particular day doesn’t provide a complete picture of all the ways schools are helping students succeed.

Think of it this way: You can’t drive a car by only watching the speedometer. You also keep your eye on the road, check the mirrors, monitor the gas tank and pay attention if the engine light comes on. Similarly, the Dashboard provides information on different aspects of student performance, which will give a more complete picture of a school’s progress. The Dashboard also reports on growth to show a school’s trajectory over time.

What’s next?

The Dashboard is deliberately designed to be a work in progress: Metrics and reports will be added over time. During the field testing phase, the state will be gathering feedback to make additional modifications.

The exciting changes taking place in education will take time to fully implement. While schools are making progress in many key areas there is always more work to do. The Dashboard is part of an ongoing conversation with our community on both how we’re doing and how we can do better. Meeting goals will take a united effort, and I look forward to working with our families to ensure success for every student.

Sincerely,

Sandra Miller

Principal

Marzo, 2017

Sinceramente,

Sandra Miller

Director

*** Those in attendance will have first priority for sign up dates.  In order to participate in the Watch D.O.G.S. program this year you must attend the meeting.

Tanioka at

The LRES Art Auction, LRES Spring Fundraiser

This is a brand new event for our school so, of course, there are some questions…here are the answers FAQ’s regarding the Spring Fundraiser:

  •        This is our Spring Fundraiser this year. The silent auction that was previously held at the Hometown Fair is being moved to the Art and Silent Auction. This means that all the amazing donations AND Art will be sold on March 24th via a silent/live auction. There will not be an auction at the Hometown Fair in May. This year the fair is strictly for fun with your friends and family to celebrate the end of the year.

  •        Funds from this event will benefit S.T.E.A.M. programs

  •        The Art and Silent Auction is an Adult Only event featuring Appetizers, No Host Bar, and Music and will be held at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club. The attire is California Casual.

  •        Tickets are available for purchase at www.lrespta.com $30 per ticket or $55 for two. The price will increase the night of the event if purchased at the door.

  •        As you have probably heard the kids have been working on the Art projects and have been very excited about what they have created. These pieces will be auctioned off the on the 24th and they are really great and you will want to have them proudly displayed in your home!

  •        To follow the event and see what kind of items are going to be auctioned and see the kids hard at work go to the following Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/720206061472510/

Silent Auction Items:

We are still collecting amazing auction items to donate! If you have a business that would like to donate we would LOVE it! We are always looking for restaurants, experiences for kids and adults, tickets to sporting events and so much more! If you have any questions please contact Carrie or Claire at waysandmeans@lrespta.com!

This will be a fantastic and fun event and we are looking forward to celebrating a night of art by our kids and also raising money for STEAM programs!

Pennies for Patients!

Thank you to all those who supported Pennies for Patients!  We raised over $500 for this amazing cause…and that’s a lot of pennies!

Growth Mindset

Strengths of Will

Having a growth mindset means understanding that intelligence can be developed.

A growth mindset is a belief that we can get smarter through hard work and practice. This means that struggling with something difficult doesn’t mean you’re not smart—it’s a chance to grow your intelligence. Growth mindset is all about trying hard, using good strategies, and getting the help you need.

Growth mindset is a popular notion in the field of education right now, but it’s commonly misunderstood. It might seem like growth mindset implies that everyone has exactly the same potential in every domain, but that’s not quite true. Instead, growth mindset means everyone’s intellectual ability can always be further developed. Growth mindset is not about telling your students to never give up. A benefit of growth mindset is that it helps you stay motivated to stick it out when things are difficult, but telling students not to quit won't do that alone. You have to (truthfully!) convince kids that their efforts will result in increased ability (because ability can grow!) and remind them that they're learning when something is hard for them to do.

listserv

All schools in Capistrano Unified are transitioning away from traditional listserv emails. We will be sending messages through School Messenger.  Community members who wish to stay up to date with school messages should sign up here.  Parents of students in the school should NOT sign up for this service.  Doing so will result in double messaging.  As an additional service, community members and parents may also download the CUSD app on iTunes and Google Play to receive the same community messages via notifications.
